Welcome – VTCPA Chair & Business Meeting

9:30am – 10:30am
Cyber Security

Tax preparers are under increased threats from cyber thieves. The IRS was able to cut the number of ID thefts in half from the 2015 tax year to the 2016 tax year by cooperating with tax software providers and financial institutions. While this was great for taxpayers, the IRS and the Treasury it turns out it was terrible for tax preparers. This is because it forced cyber thieves to shift their focus toward tax preparers. As a result there were a lot more tax practitioner data breaches last filing season. In 2016 the number of tax preparer data breaches was in the single digits. That number increased to just shy of 200 tax preparer data breaches in 2017.
